High in the wild folds of the Terskei Ala-Too lies a secret cradled between steep emerald slopes — Kol-Ukok, the “Lake in a Chest.” At 3,600 meters above sea level, this alpine jewel feels like a hidden world suspended between sky and stone.
Its crystal-clear waters shimmer in silence, cold and sweet, reflecting jagged peaks and drifting clouds. Marmots whistle from rocky hillsides, eagles carve circles in the vast blue above, and rare mountain flowers — from delicate forget-me-nots to legendary edelweiss — paint the meadows with color. Here, nature speaks in whispers: wind across the grass, the distant murmur of a glacier stream, the quiet rhythm of nomadic life.
This is not just a trek — it’s a journey into authenticity.
Over four unforgettable days, you cross remote mountain passes, camp beside turquoise lakes, walk through untouched valleys, and descend along the peaceful Tuura-Suu River. Evenings are spent under open skies, sharing warm meals in the wilderness. Along the way, you encounter shepherd families who still follow ancient traditions, producing kymyz, airan, and kurut just as their ancestors did.
Kol-Ukok is for travelers who seek silence instead of crowds, raw landscapes instead of comfort zones, and meaningful connection instead of ordinary routes.
Open the chest — and discover one of Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful mountain secrets.

Authentic Camping Experiences Await:
While all overnight stays will involve camping, there may be opportunities, depending on the circumstances, to visit local shepherd’s yurts. In such cases, we’ll set up camp near these yurts, allowing you to immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of the locals.
Hydration on the Journey:
We provide mineral water for your convenience, which can also be purchased at village shops during our vehicle travels. Specifically, we’ll supply bottled water for the first two days. However, during the entire trek, carrying a significant quantity of bottled mineral water isn’t feasible. Instead, we utilize water from springs and rivers for cooking and for making tea or coffee after thoroughly boiling.
For drinking water, we recommend bringing your own water purification tablets. In Kyrgyzstan, it’s customary to drink directly from rivers and natural springs, and water filters or purification tablets aren’t commonly used. As such, you may find it challenging to locate water purification tablets or portable filters in Central Asia. Your preparedness with water purification pills will ensure you have a reliable source of clean drinking water throughout your journey.
