All-inclusive: transport, guide, horses, meals, and two nights in yurt camps.
This Song-Kol horse trek crosses two high mountain passes and reaches the shores of Song-Köl — one of Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful alpine lakes, sitting at 3,016 m and surrounded by summer pastures (jailoo) where semi-nomadic herders still live in yurts. This is the Kyrgyzstan that travelers come looking for: vast green valleys, snow-capped ridges, horses, and starry nights in a traditional yurt camp.
Distance: 47 km on horseback · Max altitude: 3,310 m · Difficulty: Moderate Group size: 2–5 travelers (small group guaranteed)
Cross two high mountain passes on horseback and reach the shores of Song-Köl — one of Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful alpine lakes, sitting at 3,016 m and surrounded by summer pastures (jailoo) where semi-nomadic herders still live in yurts. This is the Kyrgyzstan that travelers come looking for: vast green valleys, snow-capped ridges, horses, and starry nights in a traditional yurt camp.
This tour is built around the local community of Kyzart village. Your guides, horsemen, cooks, and yurt camp hosts are all from the area — people who have lived and ridden in these mountains their entire lives. By joining this trek, you directly support local families and help sustain the nomadic way of life in the region.
A note on language: Our guides may not speak fluent English, but they know every trail, pass, and weather pattern in these mountains, and they handle horses with exceptional skill. Communication on the trail is warm, simple, and often wordless — a smile, a gesture, a shared cup of tea. If you’d like a fluent English-speaking guide for cultural depth and translation, we can arrange one on request for an additional fee.
A 3-day horseback adventure across two high mountain passes to Song-Köl — Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful alpine lake at 3,016 m. Ride through green valleys, sleep in traditional yurt camps, share meals with nomadic families, and experience the Kyrgyzstan that few travelers ever see. Run entirely by the local community of Kyzart village, this trek puts you in the saddle alongside herders who have ridden these mountains all their lives.

Difficulty: Moderate. Expect 4–6 hours in the saddle per day at altitudes between 2,100 and 3,310 m. The pace is mostly walking, with some trotting and an optional gallop on the Song-Köl plains. No prior riding experience is needed — our horses are calm, well-trained, and used to beginners.
Safety first. Local guides ride alongside the group at all times. For groups of 4–5, a second horseman joins to assist. Galloping is allowed only on safe terrain with the guide’s permission. Routes are adjusted in bad weather, and the guide always has the final call. The trek is not recommended for travelers with serious heart or lung conditions, or for children under 12.

This trek may not be for you if you:
Both nights of the trek are spent in traditional yurt camps run by local families. Yurts are shared: one yurt accommodates up to 5 travelers, sleeping on mattresses laid out on the floor with thick blankets and pillows. For our group size, this usually means the whole group sleeps together in a single yurt — part of what makes this trip feel like a real shared adventure rather than a hotel transfer.
Each camp has a separate dining yurt where meals are served, an outdoor long-drop toilet, and a wash basin with cold water. There are no showers and no private rooms. If you prefer hotel-style privacy, this trek is not for you — but if you’re up for an authentic nomadic experience, you’ll remember these nights for years.
We leave Bishkek at 09:00 and drive south through the spectacular Kyrgyz mountains via Kochkor to Kyzart Pass — about 260 km / 4 hours on a paved highway. On arrival you’re welcomed at the local horse provider’s yurt for a hot lunch, where you’ll meet your guide and the horses that will be your companions for the next three days.
After a short briefing and saddle fitting, we set off on horseback over the Chaar-Archa Pass and descend into the wide, peaceful Kilemche Valley — roughly 16 km of riding through juniper-covered slopes and open pasture. Overnight in a traditional yurt camp with home-cooked dinner and the silence of the mountains.
After breakfast, we saddle up for the most scenic ride of the trek. The trail climbs steadily up to Tuz-Ashuu Pass (3,300 m), where Song-Köl Lake suddenly opens up below — a vast turquoise plateau ringed by mountains. We descend into the Song-Köl basin and reach our lakeside yurt camp for lunch (11–12 km total).
The afternoon is yours: walk along the shore, visit a neighboring herder family, try a short ride bareback like a local, or simply rest and take in the view. Dinner and overnight in the yurt camp under one of the clearest night skies in Central Asia.
Feeling brave? Try a gallop. The wide, flat plains around Song-Köl are the perfect place to feel what it’s like to ride like a Kyrgyz nomad. With your guide’s permission and once they’re confident in your riding ability, you can pick up the pace and gallop across the open steppe — always under guidance, always with safety first.
After breakfast, we ride back toward Kyzart village — about 19 km. The route depends on weather and how comfortable the group has become with the horses:
A late lunch awaits in Kyzart, after which we transfer back to Bishkek by road, arriving around 19:00.
We keep groups small to protect the quality of the experience and the well-being of the horses:
| Group size | Price per person |
|---|---|
| 2 people | $380 |
| 3 people | $330 |
| 4 people | $300 |
| 5 people | $280 (best value) |
All-inclusive: transport, guide, horses, meals, and two nights in yurt camps.
No prior experience is required. Our horses are calm, well-trained, and used to beginners. Your guide will give you a short lesson on basic riding, mounting, and stopping before we set off. That said, if you have never ridden before, expect some soreness — especially after Day 1.
Yes — but only with your guide’s permission and once they’ve assessed that you can handle the horse safely. The wide flat plains around Song-Köl on Day 2 are the ideal spot to try a gallop. Galloping on mountain trails, passes, or steep ground is not allowed for safety reasons.
Between 4 and 6 hours, with regular breaks to rest, stretch, take photos, and let the horses drink. The pace is mostly walking, with some trotting on flat sections if the group is comfortable.
A reasonable level of general fitness is enough. You should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors at altitudes between 2,100 and 3,310 meters. The riding itself is not strenuous, but altitude and long days can be tiring.
We recommend the trek for travelers aged 12 and up. Younger children can join on a case-by-case basis — please contact us in advance.
Mountain weather changes quickly. We ride in light rain, but in case of heavy storms or snow on the passes, we adjust the route (Day 3 already includes a safer alternative). Your guide always has the final call on safety.
Hearty, simple, home-cooked Kyrgyz meals: bread, jam, kaymak (clotted cream), rice and meat dishes, noodles, soups, vegetables, and lots of tea. Vegetarian options can be arranged if you let us know in advance. Please mention any allergies or dietary restrictions at the time of booking.
Traditional felt yurts with mattresses on the floor, thick blankets, and pillows. One yurt accommodates up to 5 people, so our small group usually shares a single yurt together. Toilets are simple long-drop outhouses outside, and there are no showers or electricity outlets inside the yurts. Some camps have a small solar panel for charging at the main yurt.
The standard tour is based on shared accommodation. If you’d like a private yurt for yourself or your couple, please ask us in advance — we can sometimes arrange it for an additional fee, depending on availability at each camp.
Signal is patchy in Kilemche and very limited at Song-Köl. Consider it a real digital detox. If you need to stay reachable, let your family know in advance.
The trek reaches 3,310 m, which is high but generally manageable. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol the night before, and tell your guide if you feel headaches, nausea, or dizziness. We do not recommend the trek for travelers with serious heart or lung conditions without medical clearance.
Helmets are not part of traditional Kyrgyz riding culture and are not provided by default. If you would like one, please request it at the time of booking and we will do our best to arrange it.
Booking is confirmed by full online payment in advance. Once we receive your payment, your spot is reserved and you’ll receive confirmation with all the meeting details.
Cancellations made 4 or more days before the tour start date receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made 3 days or less before the start date are non-refundable. If we cancel the tour from our side, you get a full refund or the option to reschedule.
