Travelling solo but dreaming of winter in the mountains? Join our Kyrgyzstan winter group tour and share the adventure – and the cost. In four days you ride with local horsemen across snow-covered pastures to Song-Kol, a lake at 3,016 m that almost nobody sees in winter. You sleep in stove-heated yurts, eat hot home-cooked meals, and then descend to Issyk-Kul to meet a berkutchi, a golden eagle hunter, and watch his bird fly across the winter steppe. No riding experience is needed, just good fitness and a love of wild, quiet places. Small group of up to 10: the more travellers join, the lower the price for everyone.

Winter at Song-Kol
In winter Song-Kol has no villages, no roads and no neighbours. The only shelter on the lake is a small camp of two yurts: a kitchen yurt and a sleeping yurt warmed by a stove all night. Everyone who reaches the lake that day shares this camp, so on busy nights 8–12 people sleep together. Food, firewood and equipment travel up by horse, just like you. It is an expedition shelter, not a hotel – and after two nights at the lake, the guesthouse and the hot spring on Issyk-Kul feel like pure luxury.
What to bring
Thermal underwear, a fleece and a warm down jacket, windproof trousers, warm insulated boots, a hat, a buff and warm gloves (plus a spare pair), sunglasses and sunscreen, a headlamp, a thermos (normal bottles freeze) and personal medicine.
Riding tips
Keep both feet in the stirrups, sit upright and follow the guide’s advice; lean forward uphill and back downhill. Never pass directly behind a horse. Tell your guide before you take off or put on a layer, and tie down cameras and bottles – anything that falls can startle the horses.
No. Most of our winter riders are beginners. You ride calm local horses at a walking pace, and the guide and horsemen stay with you the whole way.
At Song-Kol nights can drop to −30 °C or lower; days are often sunny and calmer. Inside the yurt the stove and warm sleeping bags keep you comfortable. Good winter clothing is essential – see the packing list above.
Two nights in heated winter yurts (at Kilemche and at Song-Kol) and one night in a guesthouse in Bokonbaevo. At the lake everyone shares one sleeping yurt; there are no private rooms.
The tour runs from 3 travellers. The price per person depends on the final group size: $950 for 3 travellers, down to $520 for 10. The more people join, the lower the price for everyone. If the group is not confirmed by the booking deadline, you can travel as a private tour or switch to another date.
