A 15-day private expedition from Osh across the Roof of the World. You drive the Pamir Highway over passes up to 4,655 m, past turquoise Karakul and the high plateau of Murghab. Then you walk six days with a yak caravan along Yashil-Kul lake and over a 3,900 m pass to the Gunt valley, sleeping in tents under huge starry skies. From Khorog you follow the Wakhan Corridor with Afghanistan across the river, hike to a viewpoint facing Karl Marx Peak and return over the Khargush pass. For fit travellers who want real remoteness, not comfort.

Moments that stay with you
Altitude
Most of the route lies at 3,500–4,500 m. Headache, poor sleep and less appetite are normal in the first days. Walk slowly, drink a lot, avoid alcohol and tell the guide about any symptoms; if they become serious, the only treatment is to go down. Ask your doctor about preventive medicine.
Roads and weather
The Pamir Highway is mostly broken asphalt, gravel and washboard; landslides after rain can change the plan. Weather turns fast: strong afternoon wind, snow above 4,000 m even in summer, nights near freezing in July. Best season: July to mid-September.
Money and connection
The region runs on cash — bring US dollars; ATMs exist only in Osh and Khorog, and cards are rarely accepted. Mobile signal is weak in Murghab and the Wakhan and absent on the trek. Keep your passport at hand: there are many border checks.
Permits
Tajikistan requires an e-visa, and the Pamir needs a GBAO permit, which we arrange. Book at least 3–6 months ahead.
What to bring
• Soft duffel bag (the yaks carry it) and a daypack
• Warm sleeping bag (comfort about −5 °C)
• Trekking boots, layers, down jacket, windproof shell, hat and gloves
• Sunglasses, sun cream with high SPF, buff against dust
• Headlamp, power bank, water bottle, personal medicine
You should be used to hiking and in good shape. Most trek days are 7–8 km, the longest is about 19 km with a pass of 3,920 m. The yaks carry your bags, you carry only a daypack. No technical skills are needed.
The route climbs step by step: Osh, then the Alay valley at 3,000 m before the high Pamir. Mild headache in the first days is common. The guide watches the group, and the plan can be changed or shortened if someone feels unwell.
Hotel in Osh, a yurt camp at Tulpar-Kul, guesthouses in Murghab, Khorog and Karakul, homestays in Alichur and Langar, and 5 nights in tents (2 people per tent) on the yak trek. Facilities are simple; on the trek there are no showers.
Most nationalities enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa. Tajikistan needs an e-visa, which you apply for online. The GBAO permit for the Pamir and the Wakhan is arranged by us.
Yes, the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan are generally safe for travellers. Our guides and drivers are locals who know the roads and the communities. It is very remote, so flexibility and patience are part of the trip.
