FAQ

Yes. Every departure is a private booking, exclusively for your own group (up to 12 people) — never combined with strangers. Your itinerary, pace, and daily riding hours are arranged around your group alone.

Because every trek is a private, individually arranged trip, pricing depends on group size, dates, and your specific requirements — we work it out with you directly once we understand these details, rather than quoting a fixed rate upfront. Get in touch by email ([email protected]), phone, or WhatsApp (+996 706 363 738) and we’ll put together a tailored quote for your group.

Most visitors reach Kel-Suu by 4×4 in a day or two, and in high season the lakeshore itself can feel crowded with vehicles and day-trippers. This trek takes the slow route: six days on horseback through the Ak-Say and Kok-Kiya valleys, where you pass through genuine herding communities living their seasonal life at the jailoo, unstaged and unchanged for tourism. You still reach the same spectacular lake at the end — but you arrive having earned it, and having seen the Kyrgyzstan that most travelers drive straight past.

Yes, and it’s still absolutely worth it — Kel-Suu is one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in Central Asia, and a full free day at the lake (Day 5) is built into the itinerary. The point of the horse trek isn’t to avoid the lake; it’s to reach it the way explorers do, with four days of authentic nomadic life along the way rather than a rushed drive.

Suitable prior riding experience is required. You’ll be in the saddle for 4–6 hours most days, on mountain trails that include river crossings and a high pass, so this isn’t a first-time-on-a-horse trip. If you’re unsure your experience is sufficient, get in touch and we can advise honestly before you book.

The physical demand is moderate to challenging: consecutive days of riding, variable weather, and one high crossing at Bogoshtu Pass (3,900 m). No technical climbing or hiking skill is needed, but you should be comfortable with several days of sustained horseback travel at altitude.

  • Day 1: Drive from Bishkek to At-Bashy, overnight at a guesthouse
  • Day 2: Transfer to Birinchi May village, meet your guides and horses, ~4 hours riding toward Bogoshtu Pass, camp overnight
  • Day 3: Cross Bogoshtu Pass (3,900 m), descend into the Ak-Say Valley with a stop at a nomadic yurt, 5–6 hours on to Jarma-Muzdabas, overnight in a tent or shepherd’s hut
  • Day 4: ~4–5 hours through the Kok-Kiya Valley to the yurt camps at Kel-Suu
  • Day 5: Free day to explore the lake at your own pace, overnight in a yurt
  • Day 6: Return transfer to Bishkek (7–8 hours, with a lunch stop)

A mix of guesthouse, yurt, and tent accommodation, matched to the location each night — comfortable at At-Bashy, traditional and simple in the mountains and at the Kel-Suu yurt camps.

Full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) is included throughout, except Day 6, which covers breakfast and lunch only (you’ll be back in Bishkek by evening). Horses, wrangler/guide support, and camping or yurt accommodation en route are included as part of the trek.

This is the heart of the trip. The route passes through active summer pastures where Kyrgyz herding families are living their real seasonal life — moving livestock, running their yurts, unaffected by tourism. You’ll stop at a nomadic yurt in the Ak-Say Valley and ride through valleys that see very few visitors compared to the Kel-Suu access road. It’s the difference between observing nomadic life from a car window and actually moving through it on horseback, at the same pace people have used here for centuries.

The trek runs July through September, when high passes are clear of snow and jailoo pastures are in full summer use — which is also when herding families are up in the mountains, so it’s the best window to encounter them.

Since every trip is a private departure built around your group and dates, availability depends on guides and horses rather than a fixed calendar — reach out by phone or WhatsApp (+996 706 363 738) and we’ll confirm within 24 hours. Booking a few months ahead of your travel window is recommended, especially for July–August dates.

Yes — that’s really who this trip is for. If your priority is simply seeing Kel-Suu Lake with minimum effort, the road trip version is faster and easier. This trek is for travelers who want river crossings, a real mountain pass, nights in a yurt or tent, and the feeling of discovering the lake rather than arriving at it — with genuine nomadic encounters as the reward along the way.
