Kel-Suu Horseback Expedition

Across the Wild Tien Shan and the Legendary Ak-Say Valley

This horseback expedition is one of the most remote and adventurous journeys in Kyrgyzstan, leading deep into the untouched wilderness of the central Tien Shan Mountains.

Unlike regular horseback tours, this route has the character of a true expedition, crossing vast high-altitude plateaus, remote valleys, and dramatic mountain passes approaching 4,000 meters. The journey follows ancient nomadic trails through the legendary Ak-Say Valley, a place where the landscape feels endless and civilization seems far away.

Because of the extreme altitude and mountain passes, this expedition has a short season — only July and August, when the high passes become accessible and the alpine pastures are at their most beautiful.

Riding strong Kyrgyz horses, you will travel through a world of open horizons, powerful rivers, and towering mountain ridges. Along the way, you may encounter nomadic shepherd families, watch herds of yaks and horses grazing on the high pastures, and experience the authentic rhythm of life in the high mountains.

One of the highlights of the expedition is the spectacular Kok-Kiya Canyon, an isolated landscape of red cliffs and dramatic rock formations where wildlife such as ibex roam the mountains.

The journey culminates at the breathtaking Lake Kel-Suu, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most mysterious and beautiful alpine lakes. Hidden between towering vertical cliffs near the Chinese border, the lake changes colors throughout the day — from deep emerald to turquoise — depending on light and water levels.

This expedition is not simply a tour — it is a rare opportunity to experience the wild heart of the Tien Shan, riding through landscapes that remain almost unchanged since the time of the great nomadic caravans.

Perfect for travelers seeking true adventure, remote landscapes, and authentic nomadic culture.
