Overview

This 10-day Terskey Ala-Too trek links the best valleys east of Karakol in one traverse: about 98 km on foot from Jyrgalan over seven passes – the highest the Ala-Kul pass at about 3,880 m – past the Boz-Uchuk lakes, through the spruce forests of Almaluu, to the hot springs of Altyn-Arashan, turquoise Lake Ala-Kul, the Karakol gorge and over the Teleti pass to Jeti-Oguz. Most nights are in yurt camps along the route, stages are short (6–14 km), pack horses carry the luggage. June to September, private trip for 2–12 people.

Horses cannot cross the Ala-Kul pass. On days 7–8 your main luggage goes round by car and you walk with what you need for one night at the lake; ask us about a porter if you prefer to walk light.

What to bring

Broken-in trekking boots, layers for 0 to 25 °C, a warm fleece or down jacket, rain jacket and trousers, sun hat and warm hat, gloves, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, trekking poles, headlamp, swimwear for the hot springs, water filter or tablets and personal medicine.

FAQ

The stages are short (6–14 km, 4–7 hours), but almost every day crosses a pass above 3,300 m and the highest is about 3,880 m. Good fitness and some experience on mountain trails are needed. Regular hiking, running or cycling 2–3 times a week is good preparation.

Eight nights in yurt camps along the route – Terim-Tor, Boz-Uchuk, Jergez, Almaluu, Altyn-Arashan, Ala-Kul, Karakol gorge and Teleti – and one night in tents in the Kurgon valley. Camps have warm bedding, simple toilets and hot meals.

Pack horses carry your main bag between the camps. Only the Ala-Kul pass (days 7–8) is closed to horses: then your bag goes round by car and you carry what you need for one night at the lake.

The tour starts and ends in Karakol. From Bishkek it is about 400 km (6–7 hours) by car. We organise the transfer and nights in Karakol on request.

The price depends on group size (2–12 people) and dates – the larger the group, the lower the price per person. Send us your dates and we will prepare an offer.

Choose this route for the complete traverse from Jyrgalan to Jeti-Oguz. Shorter: the 8-day Jeti-Oguz – Ala-Kul trek or the 3-day Ala-Kul trek. All routes: trekking tours in Kyrgyzstan.
