This 14-day Silk Road tour from Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan runs one way, from Tashkent to Bishkek, so you never travel the same road twice. The first week belongs to the great oasis cities — Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, linked by a flight, a desert drive and the fast Afrosiyob train. Then you cross the Kamchik pass into the Fergana valley for silk weavers in Margilan and potters in Rishtan, enter Kyrgyzstan at Osh and walk in the walnut forest of Arslanbob before the long mountain drive to Bishkek. Season. May–June and September–October are ideal: pleasant in the Uzbek cities and the mountain road to Bishkek is open. In July–August the desert cities are very hot.
Borders and visas. Most EU citizens need no visa for Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan; please check for your passport. The land border at Dostuk can take 1–2 hours.
Dress. Covered shoulders and knees for mosques and mausoleums, a light scarf for women.
