The Kyrgyz Republic’s Tourism Development Support Fund (TDSF) recently inked memorandums of cooperation with two important partners: the Association of Craftsmen of Kyrgyzstan and the Bishkek Mayor’s Office’s Department of Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism, and Youth Affairs. These agreements have been made with the intention of strengthening partnerships in domestic, event, and sports tourism as well as unlocking the tourism potential of the nation’s capital, Bishkek, and surrounding areas. The establishment of a long-term partnership signifies a change in the development and administration of tourism in Kyrgyzstan.
Through the memorandums, a clear indication has been given that the focus is not only on Bishkek but on the regions as well. The capital city’s attractions, facilities and urban tourism infrastructure are being brought into sharper view, while regional destinations are being primed to receive more attention. By developing coordinated efforts among local government, craft associations and the national tourism fund, a more integrated tourism ecosystem is being created. Such an ecosystem will support recognised tourism hubs, emerging destinations and the linkages between them.
A key pillar of the cooperation is digitalisation and innovation. A mobile application, provisionally titled “Vizit Bishkek”, is to be developed and launched. Via this app, tourists will be offered information on attractions and routes, booking services and excursions. By embedding digital tools into the tourism offering, the partners aim to make the visitor experience more fluid, accessible and comprehensive. This aligns with a broader push within Kyrgyzstan to embrace digital platforms for tourism promotion.
Another significant area of cooperation concerns youth entrepreneurs in the tourism sector. The agreements have been designed to provide young tourism‑industry entrepreneurs with financial support, consulting services and expert assistance. This means start‑ups offering new experiences, local tours, hospitality ventures or craft‑based services will be eligible for backing from the fund and from partner institutions.
Event tourism and sports tourism have been earmarked as growth segments in the memorandums. The partners will collaborate to organise city festivals, cultural events, sporting events and other gatherings designed to attract domestic and international visitors.
Marketing and branding are central to the cooperation framework. The agreements call for the promotion of Bishkek as an attractive tourist destination and for the development of a capital‑city brand.
Underlying all of the above is the need for high-quality tourism infrastructure—hotels, restaurants, guest houses, local craft workshops, transport links and excursion services. The memorandums highlight the improvement of service quality in hotels and restaurants, as well as the broader development of tourism infrastructure.
Taken together, the memorandum agreements create the foundation for longer‑term cooperation. The projects span digital, youth, event, marketing, and infrastructure dimensions and are designed with sustainability in mind.
