Central Asia Increases Investments in Tourism Development

Central Asian countries are actively developing the tourism industry, attracting both domestic and foreign investments, noting significant growth in revenues and construction projects in the tourism sector.

In Kyrgyzstan, from 2021 to 2024, more than $138 million in direct foreign investments have been attracted to the tourism sector. The main investors are Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as the UAE and China. The share of tourism in the country’s GDP is growing, reaching 4.3% in the first half of 2025. Investments in the construction of tourism facilities amounted to more than 11 billion som, which is 2.5 times higher than last year’s figure. The main funds are directed towards the construction and reconstruction of roads, hotels, boarding houses, and trade facilities, which contributes to job creation and infrastructure improvement.

For comparison, Kazakhstan invested nearly 950 billion tenge in the fixed capital of the tourism industry in 2024, which is 20% more than the previous year. From 2019 to 2024, more than 600 projects worth a total of 550 billion tenge were implemented, and in 2025, the income of tourism facilities increased by a quarter. The largest growth in investments was recorded in the Ulytau, Aktobe, Atyrau, and Kyzylorda regions.

In neighboring Uzbekistan, over the past years, $6.5 billion has been invested, creating 130 thousand hotel places and 48 thousand jobs. The number of guest houses has grown dozens of times, new hotels and hostels are being built, and in 2025, 400 billion soums have been allocated for infrastructure development.

Tajikistan is also actively attracting investments to implement a four-year tourism development program. For 2023–2026, more than $16 million is provided from various sources, including the private sector and international organizations. In 2019, the Asian Development Bank allocated a $10 million grant to support tourism projects.

The growth of investments in the tourism sector of Central Asia indicates the strategic priority of the industry, its importance for the economy, and the creation of new opportunities for international and domestic tourism.
