Kyrgyzstan Implements Ecological Project ‘Clean Depths of Issyk-Kul’

In August 2026, the ‘Clean Depths of Issyk-Kul’ project will be launched with the support of the Small Grants Program of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the United Nations Development Program in Kyrgyzstan. The project aims to clean the lake of garbage and plastic. Drones will be used to identify areas of waste accumulation at depth, after which divers will lift the garbage from the bottom. Three zones most affected by anthropogenic impact have been selected as pilot territories: the village of Kara-Oy, the city of Cholpon-Ata, and the village of Bosteri. Issyk-Kul is a territory with rich biodiversity, home to the largest specially protected natural areas. Therefore, the ecological situation in the region is a cause for concern. Among other projects is the development of ecotourism in the village of Enilchek.
