In Osh, the national historical-archaeological museum complex “Sulayman-Too” is being prepared for a large-scale reconstruction. For this, within the framework of the World Bank’s tourism development project, about $12 million has been allocated on a grant basis.
As reported by Deputy Director of the complex Khairullo Ibaidullaev, the allocated funds will be used to repair the main tourist locations. Roads, stairs, gates, internal premises, and museum facades will be completely updated. The restoration of Ak-Madrasa, built by Alimbek datka, is planned. The entire project is divided into 12 sections and will be implemented in three stages.
It has become known that for the convenience of persons with limited mobility, golf carts will be launched. They will run to the central parking lot of the museum and to the “Water Gates” on the eastern side.
Repair work will last two years, and the complex will not be fully closed to visitors.
Today, during the discussion of the project, Mayor Zhanarbek Akaev proposed building a bike path and pedestrian sidewalk around the mountain.
According to Khairullo Ibaidullaev, this initiative has been postponed to the next stage, as any changes to the World Heritage site must be pre-approved by UNESCO.
The Sulayman-Too reconstruction project was initiated back in 2019, but deadlines were postponed due to the pandemic and lack of funds. The last large-scale work here was carried out in 2000 as part of the celebration of Osh’s 3000th anniversary.
Annually, the complex is visited by about 300 thousand tourists, of which about 7 thousand are foreigners.
Sulayman-Too is Osh’s main attraction and in 2009 became the first site in the country included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
