The Cabinet has amended the regulation on the Department for the Conservation of Biodiversity and Specially Protected Natural Areas under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision.
The document significantly expands the powers of the agency. Now the department will coordinate the activities of specially protected natural areas (SPNAs), participate in the creation of new nature reserves and the expansion of existing ones, develop proposals for the development of the SPNA network, and attract investments and grants for the implementation of environmental projects.
In addition, the agency will receive additional control powers. Its employees will be able to stop violations of environmental legislation, inspect vehicles, luggage, hunting equipment and harvested products on the territory of SPNAs, seize illegally obtained objects of flora and fauna, draw up protocols and acts, and control the use of state property and funds of specially protected natural areas.
The department is also tasked with maintaining state databases on biodiversity, coordinating the financial and economic activities of nature reserves and national parks, organizing protective and biotechnical measures, participating in the maintenance of the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan and developing ecological and scientific tourism.
The resolution will come into force in ten days.
