An international symposium on the development of geoparks in the mountainous regions of Kyrgyzstan was held in the village of Kadji-Sai, Issyk-Kul region. The focus of the discussion was ecology, tourism, and a new legislative framework for sustainable territorial development. The international symposium on the creation and development of geoparks in the mountainous regions of Kyrgyzstan took place on April 29-30 in the village of Kadji-Sai. The discussion focused on the prospects for developing geoparks as a tool for the ‘green’ economy, ecotourism, and preservation of the country’s natural heritage. Special attention was paid to the draft law ‘On Geoparks’, which should consolidate the legal status of such territories and create conditions for the republic’s integration into the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network through a more flexible mechanism for their creation and inter-agency coordination. The initiative is related to increased attention to the mountainous regions of the Kyrgyz Republic and the search for new models of economic development that combine tourism, ecology, and employment for the population. The idea of creating geoparks in our country has been discussed for several years. Now is the key stage – the formation of a law that will define the status of such territories, management mechanisms, and opportunities for investments and infrastructure development in the regions. The event was organized by representatives of the mountain agenda with the support of international partners, including GIZ, JICA, and OSCE.
