Geoparks as a New Growth Point: Future of Mountain Regions Discussed at Issyk-Kul

A symposium dedicated to the creation and development of geoparks in Kyrgyzstan is taking place in the Issyk-Kul region.

The event is held in Kaji-Say village and is devoted to the topic ‘Prospects for the creation and development of geoparks in the mountain regions of Kyrgyzstan.’ It is organized as part of the five-year action plan for the development of mountain regions (2023–2027).

The initiator is the Special Representative of the President on mountain issues, Dinar Kemerova, with the support of international organizations and state bodies.

Participants in the symposium include deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh, representatives of the presidential administration, relevant ministries, local authorities, as well as experts and international partners.

Participants discuss the creation of geoparks as a tool for sustainable development of mountain territories — from preserving natural and cultural heritage to developing tourism, science, and the green economy.

Special attention is paid to existing initiatives:

* ‘Teskey Geopark’ on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul;
* ‘Madygen’ in Batken region;
* Geopark project in Osh region.

Issues of creating a single coordinating body, developing a scientific base, and improving legislation in this area are also discussed.

It is expected that the symposium will result in specific steps to include Kyrgyzstan in the international network of UNESCO Global Geoparks and develop the country’s mountain regions.
