Kyrgyzstan Confirms Its Ability to Host World-Class Events

The World Nomad Games are a key international brand for Kyrgyzstan, enhancing its tourism attractiveness and strengthening its global image. Ahead of the 2026 Games, VB.KG correspondent spoke with Belek Usenbekov, Deputy Head of the International Secretariat and Sports Coordinator. He discussed preparations, expansion of participant geography, new programs, infrastructure, and differences from previous Games.

Preparations for the Games: Active phase. The Organizing Committee was formed at the beginning of the year under the leadership of Edil Baysalov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. The Secretariat coordinates promotion, sports, culture, and science programs, interaction with organizations and countries. Early launch ensured a clear system of inter-agency interaction.

Participants: The number of countries is growing: 2014 — 19, 2016 — 61, 2018 — 84, 2022 (Turkey) — 79, 2024 (Kazakhstan) — 89. In 2026, about 100 countries are expected. Invitations were sent diplomatically and through ministries. The program includes sports, culture, and science, differing from the Olympic Games.

New Elements: Sports program — 43 sports, traditional for nomads, about 3000 athletes. Expanded demonstration program for national games of participating countries. Opening ceremony — August 31 in Bishkek, then events in Issyk-Kul region. Cultural program: ethno-festival, contests of ethno-music, ethno-fashion, ethno-hits, storytellers’ competitions in Ruh Ordo and Kyrchyn gorge.

Infrastructure and Inter-Agency Work: Approved plan from May 2025 to September 2026: Ministry of Culture — culture, State Sports Agency — sports, Ministry of Science — conferences, MFA — promotion, МВД, Health, Transport — security, medicine, logistics. Funding from the Cabinet of Ministers, budget to be approved by year-end.

Challenges: Large-scale tasks in logistics, security, accommodation, facility preparation, and promotion; synchronization of state structures.

Differences from 2018 Games: Development of documents: agreement, concept, guidelines, list of national sports. In 2018, transfer to Turkey was symbolic without guidelines.

Economic and Tourism Impact: Tourist flow increased 3–5 times after the first Games. Improved image: associations with nomad culture, nature, hospitality. Presentations on Euronews, National Geographic.

Highlight: August 31 — Independence Day, SCO summit opening (about 15 heads of state), presentation of ‘Azattyk Arena’ stadium (over 50,000 spectators), Games opening ceremony. Closing — at Cholpon-Ata hippodrome with a theatrical performance.
