Stars, Edelweiss and Tunduks: Kyrgyzstan Classifies Hotels and Guesthouses

The State Agency for Tourism Development, together with the Tourism Development Support Fund, has begun accepting applications from hotels, guesthouses, yurt camps, and resorts for the classification of accommodation facilities.

According to the Agency, the campaign aims to improve the quality of tourism services, establish uniform service standards, and enhance the competitiveness of the country’s tourism sector.

Accommodation facilities can undergo assessment and receive an official category:
– hotels and resorts — under the “stars” system,
– guesthouses — under the “edelweiss” system,
– yurt camps — under the “tunduk” system.

Classification is voluntary. The department emphasized that for businesses, undergoing classification provides an opportunity to officially confirm the level of services provided, increase trust from clients and partners, and use the assigned category in advertising and informational materials.

Applications are accepted through a specialized online platform. To undergo classification, it is necessary to:
– register on the online platform;
– select the type of accommodation;
– conduct a self-assessment according to established criteria;
– submit an application for classification;
– attach the necessary documents;
– provide access for an expert to the facility for assessment;
– receive a decision on category assignment and a certificate.

The certificate is valid for three years. Information about classified facilities is included in the register of classified accommodation facilities.
