Tourism — Our Driver of Growth!

The inclusion of the Kyrgyz Republic in the lists of the best tourist destinations for 2026 according to The New York Times and Financial Times is not a random compliment to exoticism or a one-time luck. It is the result of a combination of factors that have begun to form a sustainable system in recent years. This means that our country is gradually moving from the category of ‘little-known destination for enthusiasts’ to the status of a full-fledged player on the world’s tourist map.

International recognition as an indicator of the trend

The New York Times highlights Kyrgyzstan as an inspiring destination with the Tian Shan mountains – a region that is today becoming one of the key magnets for active, eco-friendly, and conscious tourism. Financial Times includes the country in the top 50 vacation spots, where not only natural landscapes are important, but also the overall impression: safety, logistics, service, authenticity.

For global media, this is not an ‘advance’. Such ratings are formed based on long-term observations: tourist flows, reviews, investment climate, and geopolitical risks. The Kyrgyz Republic is demonstrating positive dynamics across all these parameters for the first time in a long time.

Stability factor: the basis of tourist growth

The first and key condition is the internal stability of the country. Tourism is extremely sensitive to any forms of uncertainty. The absence of mass protests, revolutions, and street unrest forms basic trust among both foreign tourists and tour operators. No less important is the issue of safety. In tourist areas today, order is really felt: criminal risks are reduced, spontaneous ‘bandit’ schemes are a thing of the past. For a foreign tourist, this is critical – safety always comes before the beauty of landscapes.

Infrastructure and service: the ‘shameful stage’ is behind us

Just a few years ago, infrastructure was one of the main brakes on the development of the tourism industry. Broken roads, scary toilets, poor roadside service – all this formed a negative image, even with the presence of unique nature. Today the situation is changing. Roads are improving, basic but acceptable service is appearing, roadside infrastructure is developing. The main thing is that the mindset is changing! Local residents and entrepreneurs have already well understood the value of service as an economic resource.

Of course, this is not yet the level of developed tourist countries, but Kyrgyzstan has already passed the most painful stage.

Culture, nature, and sustainable tourism

Special attention deserves the course towards sustainable tourism development. The international community is increasingly choosing destinations where the preservation of nature and traditions is not declared, but actually implemented. Yurt camps, ethno-tourism, mountain routes, participation of local communities – all this forms a unique offer that cannot be copied. Kyrgyzstan wins here due to authenticity, not artificial tourist surroundings.

Regional integration: Central Asia as a single route

I have studied the requests and can confidently say – most foreign tourists, for example from America and Europe, want to see all Central Asian countries at once. That is why developing joint tours with neighbors is a strategically correct step. Resolving border issues, simplifying logistics, and political dialogue within the region sharply increase the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan as part of a large route. In this context, the role of the country’s top leadership is significant. When the head of state personally promotes tourism: demonstrates an active lifestyle, mountain hikes, skiing – this works not only for the domestic audience but also for the external image of the country.

Weak points: institutional deficit

Despite all the successes, the industry still largely relies on private initiative. The tourism support fund permanently suffers from a lack of competent administration, and the profile department faces chronic shortages of staff and resources. This is a systemic risk. Without strong institutions, growth may slow down or become chaotic. The private sector has already proven its effectiveness, but it needs clear rules of the game, strategic planning, and government co-financing, especially in the regions.

Prospects

The Kyrgyz Republic today is at a rare point of balance: the natural potential is already recognized by the world, stability is ensured, service is developing, and regional cooperation opens new markets. If the state manages to strengthen institutional support for the industry without suppressing private initiative, tourist growth can become one of the key drivers of the economy for the coming decades.
