In the summer of 2024, our team from Kyrgyz Tourism set out on an expedition to the heart of Kyrgyzstan — the mysterious land of Koy-Kap. This mountainous region, filled with legends and extraordinary beauty, offered us unique encounters with wildlife and made us feel like part of this ancient world. During our four days in Koy-Kap, we saw that this area is not just a spot on the map but a special place where animals and the spirits of the mountains reign.
Day 1: First Encounters with the Wild
As soon as we landed, we were surrounded by breathtaking nature. Mist-covered mountain slopes and the sound of rushing rivers created the feeling of being in an untouched world. On the first day, we saw many wild boars and mountain goats. These animals confidently roamed their home, paying no attention to us, reminding us that we were merely guests here.
Day 2: The Mystery of the Wild Yaks
On the second day, we encountered some extraordinary residents of Koy-Kap — eight wild yaks that were once brought here by people. Their story is unique: in 2000, when there were plans to establish a hunting lodge for foreigners in this region, young yaks were transported to Koy-Kap. However, the challenging conditions and the costly helicopter transport made the project unprofitable. The hunting company abandoned the idea, leaving the camp deserted, while the yaks remained to live in this wild land. Over the years, they adapted and became fully integrated into the mountains, almost like true wild yaks, freely living here as a memory of a failed attempt to tame this land.
Day 3: Searching for the Snow Leopard
On the third day, our team devoted itself to tracking perhaps the most mysterious and majestic predator of these mountains — the snow leopard. Known as the true ruler of Koy-Kap, the snow leopard, or irbis, is a rare and elusive creature. We hoped to catch even a fleeting glimpse of this magnificent animal. In the dense forests and near rocky cliffs, we saw the tracks of the leopard, confirming its presence nearby, but it remained unseen. Despite our disappointment, each paw print was a reminder that we were in the heart of a wild world, where each creature follows its own laws.
Day 4: Wrapping Up the Journey
Our four days in Koy-Kap came to an end, leaving us with a deep sense of respect and wonder for this mystical land. We left, leaving a piece of our hearts there and bringing home memories of encounters with a wild world that lives in its own rhythm. Every moment, from encounters with boars and mountain goats to the quest for the snow leopard, reminded us that Koy-Kap is not just a place; it’s a living world.
