ITINERARY

Start your adventure with a scenic drive over the majestic Too-Ashu Pass, offering panoramic views of the stunning Suusamyr Valley. Along the way, marvel at the winding Kokomeren River, which carves its way through rugged canyons and lush landscapes. Stop for lunch in the quaint village of Kyzyl-Oi, where you’ll get a taste of authentic Kyrgyz cuisine.

In the afternoon we will plan a two-hour horseback ride through the peaceful valley surrounding Kyzyl-Oi, taking in the sweeping vistas of the mountains and the traditional nomadic way of life. End the day with a warm, home-cooked dinner and a cozy stay at a local family homestay, where you’ll experience true Kyrgyz hospitality.

Your adventure continues just outside Kyzyl-Oi village, where you’ll meet your guides and get acquainted with your horses for the day. Setting off on a gentle trail, you’ll ascend gradually into the beautiful Oi-Kaying Jailoo (summer pasture), passing through rolling green hills and breathtaking mountain scenery.

Around the 6-kilometer mark, you’ll encounter a fascinating ancient rock with Persian inscriptions, a hidden gem for history and archaeology enthusiasts. As you continue along the trail for another 15 km, the landscape opens up to reveal expansive pastures dotted with nomadic shepherd camps.

By the time you reach your campsite, perched just below 3,000 meters, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the valley you ascended from. Here, you’ll settle near local Kyrgyz nomads, gaining insights into their traditional way of life while enjoying a delicious meal of local cuisine. Spend the evening learning about Kyrgyz customs and the deep bond between the nomads and their horses before a restful night under the stars.

Begin the day by continuing your ascent through the Oi-Kaying Jailoo, heading towards the mountain pass at an elevation of 3,411 meters. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below, where nomadic life thrives—herds of horses and cattle graze among yurt settlements, set against a backdrop of fir forests.

As you descend from the pass, watch the landscape transform from high alpine meadows to dense forests. Leaving the main road behind, you’ll follow a smaller, winding trail that meanders through fir trees and alongside bubbling creeks, offering peaceful moments of solitude in nature.

After covering about 20 km, you’ll arrive at Sary-Kol Lake, a picturesque spot nestled in lush greenery and tranquil forests. Settle in by the serene lakeshore, surrounded by the beauty of Kyrgyzstan’s natural wilderness, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance before an evening of rest and relaxation in this idyllic setting.

Today’s journey takes you from the tranquil shores of Sary-Kol Lake to the picturesque Kokondu Lake, deep within the mountains. The trail winds through valleys, past scenic mountain lakes, and crosses several rivers, offering a variety of landscapes along the way.

As you ride, you’ll pass over rolling mountain hills that reveal ever-changing views of the nomadic pastures, dotted with herds of cattle and horses grazing freely. Immerse yourself in the nomadic spirit as you traverse this vast and rugged land, with opportunities to hone your horseback riding skills along the way.

After crossing the final uphill stretch before reaching Kokondu Lake, you’ll ascend into the Kashka-Suu Jailoo, where nomads traditionally herd their animals. The day concludes with camping in the wild, surrounded by the untouched beauty of Kyrgyzstan’s highland wilderness. Relax under the stars, enjoying the peaceful solitude of this remote area.

After breakfast, continue your horseback trek deeper into the heart of Kyrgyzstan’s nomadic lands. Today’s ride will be longer, covering around 25 km, and will be filled with enriching encounters with local nomads and shepherds living in the high pastures.

As you pass through this remote region, you’ll witness the authentic daily life of Kyrgyz shepherds, with herds of livestock grazing in the vast open valleys. Along the way, curious locals may greet you and, in true Kyrgyz hospitality, might even invite you to share a drink of kymyz—traditional fermented mare’s milk.

In the afternoon, you’ll set up camp near a local shepherd family’s yurt in the peaceful Ashairyk Jailoo. Spend the evening immersed in the nomadic culture, enjoying the simplicity of life in the mountains, and sleeping under the stars next to your newfound friends.

The day begins with a scenic ride up to Sandyk Jailoo, following a small mountain river winding through lush hills towards Ak-Shyirak. As you climb, the beautiful Sandyk Valley unfolds before you and you catch sight of the stunning Lake Sarkol, often referred to as the “mountain jewel” of the region.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch break near the lake and take in the spectacular scenery. After that, you continue your ride across the vast horizons of the Sandyk Valley, admiring the stunning views and lush landscape.

At the end of the day, you will spend the night at the Tulpar-Tash yurt camp where you can relax and enjoy a delicious dinner while reflecting on your adventures. Today’s riding distance is approximately 18-20 km.

On your last day, you will leave Tulpar-Tash, leaving behind the stunning Song-Kol Lake as you ride towards Kyzart village via the Uzbek Pass. The pass will reward you with stunning panoramic views of the entire Song-Kol Valley, creating a perfect backdrop for your final ride.

After descending to the village, you will enjoy a delicious lunch before the transfer to Kochkor village is organized. This marks the end of your horse riding adventure, which is full of unforgettable experiences and impressive landscapes.

The horseback riding rules.

Kyrgyzstan is an incredible place to explore on horseback! With vast, untamed landscapes, riding offers a unique and adventurous way to experience the country. Our experienced guides and skilled horsemen will ensure your safety and enjoyment—follow their instructions carefully and feel free to ask questions anytime.

Riding Tips:

  • Clothing: Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants to avoid chafing. Bring layers, as the weather can change quickly. Gloves are also a good idea.
  • Adjusting Layers: If you need to add or remove a jacket, let your guide know first. Sudden movements or sounds can startle horses, and our guides will help with animals prone to spooking.
  • Hydrate & Eat Well: Riding may not be aerobic, but it’s still physically demanding. Stay hydrated and eat properly to avoid fatigue.
  • Camera & Gear: Kyrgyzstan’s scenery is stunning from horseback! Keep cameras and water bottles securely fastened, as unexpected falling objects can frighten even the most experienced horses.
  • Safety Around Horses: Never walk directly behind a horse—stay at least 2 meters away. Horses have blind spots behind them and may kick if startled. Approach them from the side and speak out loud if you’re passing nearby.
  • Horse Behavior: Horses are intelligent and have unique personalities. If disagreements arise with your horse, remain calm and assertive to maintain control.

Riding Basics:

  1. Keep Your Feet in the Stirrups: This will help you maintain balance, especially over rough terrain.
  2. Sit Straight and Centered: Align your body with the horse’s mane to stay balanced.
  3. Reins Are Your Control: Use the reins to steer and stop. Pull back to slow down and to one side to turn.
  4. Get the Horse Moving: Say “chu” to urge the horse forward. If needed, give a gentle kick or tap with the whip.
  5. No Snacking: Horses might try to eat while riding, but this slows everyone down. Pull their head away and keep them moving.
  6. Adjust Your Position: Lean forward going uphill and lean back when going downhill.
  7. Mind Group Dynamics: If you’re an experienced rider, keep in mind that others may not be. Ride at a pace that doesn’t cause unnecessary excitement among the horses, especially in mixed-experience groups.

For Families with Children:

  • We recommend children be at least 7 years old for short rides and 10 years old for overnight trips. Younger children can enjoy short, guided “pony rides” under supervision.
  • Kyrgyz culture values horse-riding skills from a young age, and we encourage children to experience this in a safe, guided environment.

Respect for Horses:

  • Our horsemen care deeply for their animals, which play a vital role in their daily lives and culture. We select gentle, surefooted horses for mountain terrain to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable ride.

Horseback riding in Kyrgyzstan offers an unforgettable way to connect with nature and Kyrgyz nomadic culture. Listen to your guides, treat the horses with respect, and enjoy the adventure!
